Understanding Training Evaluations for Productive Employees

The evolution of the concept of performance management as a new Human Resource Management model reflects a change of emphasis in organizations toward a facilitation model of leadership. This change has been accompanied by recognition of the importance to the employee and the institution of relating work performance to the strategic or long-term and overarching mission of the organization as a whole.
Performance appraisal is a process of assessing, summarizing and developing the work performance of an employee. The employee appraisal must be based on managing expectations for the job the employee.

Training focuses on providing learning opportunities for employees that will hopefully produce measurable results: In general, training evaluations should show that:

  • The amount of observed production gain was worth more than the resources allocated.
  • The employee can do new job functions.
  • The employee can do their job functions in less time.
  • The employee is able to make judgments more like those a supervisor would make.

For example, do more than three quarters of employees meet their learning objectives at the end of the training and learning period? (Example: When employees receive computer based training, technical training, or employee training, were their learning objectives met?)

As a result of training, employees should be more motivated and productive. Were standard set by which the motivation and productivity are measured?

  • All employees have written performance standards.
  • All employees know how they're doing compared with their standards.
  • All employees receive at least one informal interim review per year.
  • All employees receive an annual written performance appraisal.
  • All employees are meeting their performance standards or there is a performance improvement plan in place.

  • Does a reward and recognition system exists and is it used?
  • Are salary increases differentiated based on performance?
  • Do employees understand the company's direction, department's goals, and their role in achieving these goals?
  • Do employees understand specifically what their supervisor expects of them?
  • Do employees understand how well they are performing and where they need to improve?
  • Do employees have the necessary authority to perform their job?
  • Does employee performance appraisal accurately reflect their performance?
  • Do employees have the skills and knowledge they need to do their jobs?
  • Is good performances are acknowledged and appreciated.

For performance managers and employees alike, continuous improvement requires the ability to learn, adapt, solve problems, and communicate effectively in diverse groups.

Employees must take personal and proactive responsibility for their learning, achievements and careers.

Training evaluations allow you to move faster than your industry and ahead of your industry, make more informed training and hiring decisions, drive and align training initiatives, integrate your company's training programs and evaluations,
